Why the Right Construction Partner Knows When to Say No

Why the Right Construction Partner Knows When to Say No

Posted on 11.04.2026 by Jason Dunaway

Strategy is a set of choices, not a list of everything we can do. Those choices determine where we concentrate our people, capital, relationships, and time.

They allow us to say yes with confidence when a project fits our capabilities and creates meaningful value for the customer. They also give us the discipline to say no when it does not.

In 2026, we have spent significant time defining our strategy across D&Z's Nuclear, Fossil, Industrial, and Renewables markets. That work required us to take a hard look at where we can deliver our greatest value - and what we should decline.

Our customer focus demands that level of honesty. Strong customer relationships require transparency about scope, timing, risk, and whether saying no is the right decision for both the customer and D&Z.

So, what does D&Z say no to?

  • Projects without strong customer or partner alignment. We prioritize relationship-led growth and work where strong safety and execution performance can build trust and lead to repeat work or broader participation.
  • Isolated transactions. We pursue durable, strategic relationships - not one-off transactions. Our focus is on integrated work with room to expand, where we can deliver measurable value, strengthen customer trust, and support long-term performance.
  • Work without a credible path to delivery. We look for projects where we can influence the work early, define our role clearly, and connect planning to safe, reliable execution. Our strongest fit includes opportunities to contribute through engineering, constructability, project controls, construction, commissioning, or ongoing support.
  • Unclear scope or misaligned partners. We pursue work with clear interfaces, responsibilities, and decision rights so we can price, plan, and deliver responsibly. We create the greatest value when we can own our part of the outcome and work with aligned customers and partners.
  • Unmanageable commercial or execution risk. We seek commercial structures that align risk with the party best positioned to manage it. We prioritize work where we can influence the plan, manage what we control, and allocate risk responsibly.

Every D&Z leader and employee plays a role in executing this strategy. When we understand what we do - and do not do - we create shared expectations and aligned priorities. On the job site, that clarity supports stronger handoffs, better communication, seamless coordination, and safer, more reliable results.

By operating with discipline, clarity, and accountability, D&Z defines our future by how we deliver. Saying no to work that does not fit gives us the capacity to commit the right people, capabilities, and attention to the projects we choose to serve.

That is the power of saying no: It creates room to say yes with confidence and the capacity to deliver on that commitment.

If your project requires a partner that understands where it can add the most value and has the discipline to deliver, we welcome the conversation.
