Your City at Work: From the Mayor's Desk

Read below to learn more about initiatives my administration is working on, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

Today, we commemorate the 25^th anniversary of September 11^th terrorist attacks. We honor and remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, including the ten Stamford residents who lost their lives that day, and hold their families in our hearts.

We also pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who ran toward the danger to help others. That includes the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the many first responders who have since lost their lives or continue to live with illnesses resulting from their service at Ground Zero.

Although this day will forever be etched in our memory as a day of unimaginable loss, we also witnessed extraordinary acts of service and humanity, not just from first responders, but from ordinary Americans. From those who volunteered at Ground Zero, to the thousands of Americans who waited in line for hours to donate blood, to those men and women who signed up to serve in our military. These selfless acts demonstrated a unity and patriotism that brought us all strength in the days and months that followed.

Please join the Stamford Fire Department this evening for the 25^th Anniversary 9/11 Ceremony at 7:00 PM at the Woodside Fire Station (1620 Washington Boulevard).

MAYOR'S UPDATES

• 9/11 Livestrong Ride: Yesterday, was a beautiful morning to send off the cyclists participating in the LIVESTRONG First Responder Ride for Resilience in their final journey to Ground Zero. This annual ride from Boston to New York City honors the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and the thousands of other first responders who continue to face 9/11-related cancers, trauma, and mental health challenges. Thank you to the Stamford Fire Department and Stamford Police for helping to honor these riders and ensure their safety as they continued their ride to New York City.

• Stand Down 2026: Join us on September 18th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at UCONN Stamford for the 2026 Stand Down event! Come meet with local and state organizations that provide services and resources to veterans in our community.
• ICYMI - Stamford Business Growth: We continue to strengthen our position as one of New England's leading corporate and economic hubs. My administration remains focused on supporting economic growth, creating jobs, and ensuring Stamford continues to be a place where companies of all sizes and their employees can thrive. • Making Stamford Streets Safer: Making Stamford's streets safer for everyone is at the heart of our Vision Zero Program. From safer intersections and crosswalks to automated speed enforcement in school zones, we're continuing to invest in proven strategies that reduce crashes and save lives. • Stay HUSKY Covered: The City of Stamford is partnering with Stamford Health to identify at-risk HUSKY D recipients and assist them in maintaining their health care eligibility before the new rules take effect early next year. This work is being done alongside local health care providers, nonprofit social services agencies, and housing authorities to ensure that we reach individuals and families that need support. • School Construction Updates- Stamford's School Construction Story Takes the National Stage: Stamford's investment in the future of its schools is getting national attention! The City's school construction program was featured in the American Public Works Association's PWX TV Thought Leadership series and was featured at the PWX 2026 Conference, the largest gathering of public works professionals in North America. This video offers a look at why Stamford is investing in modern school facilities and how these projects will benefit students, educators, neighborhoods, and the City as a whole. It also introduces Stamford's school construction vision to public works professionals from across the country.

• Senior Center Blood Drive: The Stamford Senior Center in partnership with the Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Tuesday, September 22, from 1 pm - 6 pm at the Senior Center (2nd floor) at the Government Center. See the flyer below for more information.

• Beach Permits: Beach permits are now available for purchase online, by mail, or in person at the Cashiering and Permitting Department. Residents are encouraged to buy their permits early rather than wait until beach season! Permits are required May 1st through September 30th. Click here to purchase.

• Apply for a Special Events Permit: To reserve a pavilion or host events at city parks click here.

  RESOURCES FOR RESIDENTS

• Boards and Commissions: Are you a Stamford resident interested in serving on a City Board or Commission? Click here to learn more about serving.

• Walk In Permitting: Walk-in Permitting occurs weekly every Wednesday from 8:30 - 10:30 am. Walk-in permitting sessions take place on the 7th floor of the Stamford Government Center. For more information, visit here.

Employment Opportunities in the City

Traffic

• Eversource Cable Modernization Project: Eversource has started construction to replace two of its underground cables from 1968. To learn more and sign up for construction updates visit here.
  • Vine Road Night Work Notice: As part of the Underground Cable Modernization Project, crews will be performing night work on Vine Road to install new underground duct banks beginning Tuesday, September 8 through Tuesday, September 22. Work hours will be from Monday through Friday, 8:00 PM - 6:00 AM.

• Old Long Ridge Road Bridge: After a visual inspection of the Old Long Ridge Road Bridge, just south of Hunting Ridge Road, city engineers have implemented a temporary one-way traffic pattern, effective immediately. The City will share further updates as they become available.

• Mill Road Bridge: The Mill Road bridge near Old Long Ridge Road is open to one lane vehicular traffic. On August 4th, 2026, the Engineering Department together with Bridge Design Consultant reviewed the proposed bridge design. To watch the video and learn more about this project, visit here.
