Emily Rauhala Joins International

Whether diplomacy or trade, conflict or climate, NATO or the European Union, so much of our coverage goes beyond borders. We're excited that Emily Rauhala, whose leadership and expertise extends across these issues and institutions, will join our growing London operation as a regional editor, running a team of reporters with a pan-European focus.

It's a role that demands close collaboration with other editors and bureaus as we pursue the exclusive reporting that sets The Times apart. Emily brings a wealth of experience in that regard, having worked as an editor and a correspondent in a wide range of coverage areas.

Emily joins us from The Washington Post, where she most recently was the deputy editor overseeing politics and government. She was previously The Post's deputy international editor and, before that, Congress editor. As the paper's Brussels bureau chief, she led coverage of the European Union and NATO, chronicling how Russia's invasion of Ukraine remade regional security and investigating the failure of Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive.

"Emily is a whip-smart journalist who quickly earned the trust of reporters across the newsroom, thanks to her unerring instincts for elevating stories and compassionate leadership," said our Washington editor Matea Gold, who worked with Emily at The Post. "She will be a fabulous addition to the team."

Emily also spent more than a decade as a reporter in Asia, documenting China's rise on the world stage and its authoritarian turn at home . I n 2017, she shared an Overseas Press Club award for a series about the internet in China. She also wrote about long-separated Korean brothers , a migrant worker-poet and a lonely Chinese grandpa .

Her new gig on International is a homecoming. Early in her career, she worked as a home page producer for the International Herald Tribune in what is now the New York Times's Hong Kong office. She is happy to be back, and we are thrilled to have her.
