The Randall J. Allemang Endowed Faculty Support Fund becomes full endowed professorship

Honoring the late Randy Allemang, BSME '72, MS '73, PhD '80, the Randall J. Allemang Endowed Faculty Support Fund a the University of Cincinnati is giving new life to the immeasurable impact Allemang had on the field of structural dynamics. The fund has reached $1 million in donations, making it an official endowed professorship with the UC Foundation.

A group of former students and lifelong friends of Allemang joined to launch the fund to permanently honor his contributions to the field. The $1M mark was reached in July, and the College of Engineering and Applied Science will begin the search for a faculty member to fill this position for the 2027-28 academic year.
"The Allemang Fund is one of those special gifts we are lucky to be part of that will impact the college and our students for generations to come," said Mike Volan, senior director of principal giving for UC Foundation.
Dave Brown, AE '61, MS '63, PhD '76, and Allemang led the historic Structural Dynamics Research Lab at UC. For more than 50 years, the pair conducted groundbreaking research in vibration testing and modeling, research that was recognized worldwide, and defined the state of the art in modern experimental modal analysis.
We now have an opportunity to build on Allemang's solid foundation and international reputation to expand the lab's impact and help shape the future of the field.

Hundreds of students began their careers in the field as part of the research lab, advised by Allemang and Brown. Many of these students have gone on to lead exceptional careers of their own, carrying the foundational knowledge with them and passing it along to others.
"For more than 60 years, (the lab) has played an important role in advancing structural dynamics research while providing students with hands-on experience that has shaped their careers," said John Weidner, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science. "We now have an opportunity to build on that solid foundation and international reputation to expand the lab's impact and help shape the future of the field."
The research lab inspired and nutured countless hours of outstanding research, discovery, and collaboration. Through this endowed professorship, UC will launch SDRL Next, an initiative focused on the lab's future growth and research opportunities. The Randy Allemang Endowed Professor will lead the effort, building on the lab's 60-year legacy while supporting its evolution into the next phase of research.
SDRL Next charts the path forward, addressing five research thrusts that unite advanced manufacturing, intelligent sensing, and computational mechanics. These thrusts include metamaterials and topological insulators; additive manufacturing and lattice structures for mitigation of vibration and impact effects; physics-informed neural networks and digital twins for structural modeling, monitoring, and control; battery-free vibration sensing, ubiquitous sensing, and the internet of things; and lightweight and deployable space structures.
SDRL Next will build on the lab's longstanding technical strengths to create new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and research. This initiative continues the legacy of Allemang and Brown while advancing the next generation of structural dynamics research.

Local firm SHP honors young UC alumnus through engineering scholarships

SHP, an architectural and design firm based in Cincinnati, hosts an annual golf tournament to raise funds in memory of a former employee to provide scholarships to two incoming students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati. Josh Gentry, a UC alumnus, worked for SHP at the time of his death at age 27.

Mechanical engineering scholarship honors alumnus

An estate gift from Pringle and her husband, Thomas Pringle, honors Sullivan with the creation of the Harold Richard Sullivan Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship supports mechanical engineering students at the UC College of Engineering and Applied Science with a preference to students who are current or former service members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
