With fickle light winds and flat water, the Dubai racecourse is known for catching out even the most experienced crews, especially with points at a premium as the season nears its end. With the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix (21-22 November) drawing nearer, we dig into the data to show which teams have a track record in light airs and who could be caught out when racing begins.
Light air conditions, defined as sub 20 km/h wind speeds, reward foiling consistency and tactical positioning. The Bonds Flying Roos and Los Gallos have dominated the fleet so far this season, across vastly different venues and conditions. And it's no different in light airs. The pair are the standout light wind performers of the fleet, taking almost half the race wins in these conditions between them. Broken down, the numbers show that the Aussies lead the fleet commandingly, with an average finish position of 3.2, 10 race wins and 20 podium finishes in 31 races - a 64.5% race podium rate.
