Gregory School of Pharmacy Faculty and Alumnus Awarded for Their Contributions to Pharmacy in Florida

Over the summer, faculty and an alumnus from Palm Beach Atlantic University's (PBA) Gregory School of Pharmacy (GSOP) received three awards recognizing their contributions to the field of pharmacy in Florida. The honorees are Dean of GSOP, Dr. Dana Strachan, who received the Florida Pharmacy Association IPA Roman Maximo Corrons Inspiration & Motivation Award; Professor and Chair of Pharmacy Practice, Dr. Elias Chahine, who was named Pharmacist of the Year; and alumnus Dr. Oscar Santalo, who received The FSHP Dave Osterberger Excellence in Pharmacy Leadership Award. The awards are decided and distributed by the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FSHP), an organization that continues to cultivate community and advocacy for pharmacists in Florida.

The Awards

Dr. Strachan was awarded the Florida Pharmacy Association IPA Roman Maximo Corrons Inspiration & Motivation Award for her contributions to motivating pharmacists in the field while continuing to advocate for and advance the profession. Strachan has been involved in leadership roles both in the past and currently with FSHP and the Florida Pharmacy Association (FPA). She noted that these roles have allowed her to pour into her passion for pharmacy and for people themselves, which closely correlates to her being a recipient of this award.

Chahine received the most distinguished award, as Pharmacist of the Year. The award is given to a pharmacist who continues to demonstrate proficiency across all their academic work along with their leadership roles. Chahine served as the FSHP President in 2021to 2022. While he has contributed to roles like these, he has also continued to maintain his educational role as a professor and balanced his own academic pursuits. His dedication to his craft has furthered the mission of both FPA and FSHP as he continues to inspire his colleagues and students to approach the field of pharmacy with diligence and passion.

"To see him [Chahine] committed to all of his responsibilities here at the school, but then he takes the time to serve the profession and demonstrate scholarly work… It just speaks volumes to the type of individual, the mentor, the pharmacist that he is, and I'm incredibly proud of him because it just really shines a light on him, on the Gregory School of Pharmacy, and on PBA," said Strachan.

The FSHP Dave Osterberger Excellence in Pharmacy Leadership Award, received by Santalo, is reserved for a pharmacist who has presented strong leadership skills while also expressing and allowing for innovation in their management practices in program and service improvement. His award highlights the aspects of empathy-based care that are included in an education from GSOP. These teachings encourage pharmacists to desire to care for both the staff under them and the people they are serving in a more individual manner. This allows for new ideas and practices to be created and then implemented.

The Greater Impact

The awards that were received by these faculty and alumni shine a light not only on GSOP but also on the environment fostered at PBA. For current and prospective students, it is critical in helping them realize that GSOP is not offers the highest quality faculty, but it also remains focused on learning in a Christ-first institution. From this, students are provided with an even greater outlook on why their work matters. From this, student gain an even better understanding of why their work matters and how they can pursue various fields in pharmacy while continuing to glorify Christ by exemplifying servant leadership, providing empathy-based care, and spreading the light of Christ wherever their path takes them.
