Women Who Fund America Launches Episode 1, Taking Audiences Inside the Decisions That Shape Access to Capital

Debuting at SOCAP26 in Chicago, the podcast and documentary initiative unites five fund managers representing more than $5 billion in capital to spotlight capital innovation, entrepreneur growth and economic mobility.

October 13, 2026

CHICAGO, IL - October 13, 2026 - Women Who Fund America today announced the premiere of Episode 1 on the ImpactAlpha Podcast Network, launching a national conversation about who makes investment decisions, why some businesses secure funding while others struggle, and how to expand access to the right kinds of growth capital.

Created and executive produced by Kim Folsom, founder, chairperson and CEO of Founders First Capital Partners, the multiplatform project pairs frank podcast roundtables with documentary storytelling. Five participating fund managers collectively represent more than $5 billion across venture capital, impact private credit and community finance. The series aims to demystify capital for entrepreneurs while encouraging funders and allocators to reconsider whose ideas, businesses, and communities they help advance.

"After three decades on both sides of the capital table, I know that a great business idea is not enough if a founder cannot find the right funding partner. We created Women Who Fund America to make capital decisions less mysterious and to show what becomes possible when more entrepreneurs can access financing designed for how their businesses actually grow. This is about ownership, innovation, quality jobs and economic mobility."

Why the capital conversation needs to change

Founders face a maze of financing options-venture equity, revenue-based capital, debt and community-focused finance-each with different return expectations, costs and implications for ownership. At the same time, allocators work within investment mandates and networks that influence which opportunities they see. Episode 1 lets audiences hear how seasoned capital providers arrived at their investment philosophies and how they distinguish a promising business from the right fit for a particular fund.

Episode 1 brings Folsom together with Amy Nelson, Managing Partner, Rethink Education, and Betsy Fore, Founding Partner and Managing Director, Velveteen Ventures, in a roundtable guided by Frank Altman, founder of Community Reinvestment Fund, USA and author of A New Capitalism: Creating a Just Economy That Works for All. Betty Francisco, CEO of Boston Impact Initiative (BII) is part of the project's broader cohost team.

"The question is not simply how we get more money into the market. It is how we build financing systems that recognize different kinds of businesses, different kinds of risk and different kinds of opportunity. By making those decisions visible, this series can help founders make better choices and encourage capital providers to look again at businesses their traditional models may miss."

- Frank Altman, founder of Community Reinvestment Fund, USA and author of A New Capitalism: Creating a Just Economy That Works for All

"Venture capital is an extraordinarily powerful tool-but it is not the right tool for every company. Founders deserve a more honest conversation about what investors are looking for, what growth really costs and which funding path supports the business they want to build. I hope our conversation helps entrepreneurs focus on sustainable value creation, not just the prestige of raising money."

- Amy Nelson, Managing Partner, Rethink Education

"A founder's journey is rarely a straight line, and the people who recognize potential are not always the ones with the most traditional credentials. We need to make the networks, knowledge and relationships behind investment decisions more accessible. I want founders watching this series to see that their lived experience can be a strength-and that finding believers who understand their mission can change everything."

- Betsy Fore, Founding Partner and Managing Director Velveteen Ventures

"How capital is structured, and who makes decides where is goes, shapes what is possible for communities. The goal is not simply to shift how money flows, but to support funding models that help businesses grow while keeping ownership and value with the founders and workers who created it. I hope this series leads to new conversations about community wealth, shared ownership and capital that works for people."

- Betty Francisco, CEO, Boston Impact Initiative (BII)

A view from entrepreneurs-and a platform for the dialogue

Chicago-based entrepreneur Valarie King-Bailey of OnShore Technology Group brings a business-owner perspective to the importance of identifying not just financing, but a supportive ecosystem that helps founders understand the options and relationships available to them.

"For business owners, the breakthrough is not simply finding someone willing to provide capital. It is connecting with the right capital for your stage of growth-and with an ecosystem of people who understand your business, open doors and help you make informed decisions. Demystifying how to navigate financing options and build those relationships can be transformational for entrepreneurs who are ready to scale, create jobs and expand opportunity."

- Valarie King-Bailey, OnShore Technology Group

ImpactAlpha is the series' media partner and will carry the podcast on its network.

"The people making capital allocation decisions shape the future of our economy, yet the process often remains opaque to founders and the broader public. Women Who Fund America brings experience and candor to a conversation that deserves a much larger audience. We are excited to bring Episode 1 to the ImpactAlpha Podcast Network and invite our community to engage, question and share."

- Dennis Price, CEO, ImpactAlpha
