On June 16th multiple Spokane police officers responded to assist Spokane County with the Upriver fire. The wildfire, which was spreading quickly, was threatening several homes and lives in the neighboring communities.
Spokane police responded to a mutual aid request by Spokane County Sheriff's Office to assist with evacuations. They worked swiftly with Spokane County Deputies, going door to door notifying the community, ensuring the safe removal of residents from danger zones.
In addition to evacuations, SPD assisted SCSO with road closures, preventing entry into hazardous areas as well as ensuring responders fighting the fires the mobility needed to actively work the wildfire.
The proximity of the wildfire to the neighborhood and roadways resulted in police vehicles becoming covered in fire retardant. This exposure highlights the close proximity of the officers to the fire and their willingness to put themselves at risk to protect the community.
Incidents like this take a large number of resources and shows the importance of mutual aid between all county and regional assets.
