Thompson Announces More than $1.3 Million in Federal Funding for Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson today announced $1,345,000 in federal funding for the Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company to enhance its facilities and help alleviate the shortage of first responders in Pennsylvania.

The funding will be used to repair and rehabilitate the Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company's existing building, including enhancements to accommodate full-time, live-in training facilities, which is expected to help with staffing shortages for first responders in Central Pennsylvania. The Commonwealth, like other states, continues to face a recruitment and retention shortage for volunteers. Fire company leaders hope this funding will help grow first responder ranks in Lycoming County.

"Our first responders are an essential part of our communities, and we must work to recruit and retain more," Rep. Thompson said. "I was pleased to secure this funding so we can update the Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company's building and help make it a regional hub for training first responders. This is a great investment for expanding public safety in Lycoming County."

"The Old Lycoming Twp. Volunteer Fire Company greatly appreciates Congressman Glenn Thompson recognizing our critical need to provide lifesaving services by supporting our project with this significant funding provided in the USDA Rural Development Grant," said Donald Neidig, Grant Manager, Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company. "The project will add to the station approximately 2,000 square feet and renovate 21,000 square feet. Our objective is to continue the all-important emergency services to these areas through enhancing and extending the role of the volunteer emergency service providers and the tax-saving role they play in provision of critical emergency services."

"I was honored to help Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company get a $1 million grant from the state in 2023," said PA State Rep. Joe Hamm (R-Lycoming/Union). "This additional Federal funding from Congressman Thompson will help the Fire Company complete the renovation of their fire station to incorporate their college student live-in program within the fire house, modify the fire station facilities to accommodate current operational needs, and enhance the facility for future recruitment and retention of essential volunteers. I want to thank Congressman Thompson for working with me to help the Fire Company get this project done."

Rep. Thompson secured the funding through Community Project Funding for Fiscal Year 2026, which was approved in the appropriations package the House passed to reopen the government this fall.

The Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company in recent years has secured local, state, and federal funding to complete this project.
