2026 FISU World University Championship Cycling Opens in Chongli

Peking University, June 29, 2026: Over a hundred cyclists gathered in China's Hebei Province on the night of June 24 for the opening ceremony of the 2026 FISU World University Championship Cycling held in the Chongli District, Zhangjiakou, which served as a host city for the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

This year's competition runs from June 25 to 29, comprising 15 events across three disciplines: Road Cycling, Mountain Bike, and Athletics Field Criterium. According to the FISU official website, there will be five men's and five women's individual events, as well as five team demonstration events, which will "serve as a trial for their possible inclusion as official events in the next edition of the Championship."

Notably, as a co-host and facilitator of the event, Peking University played an important role in organization and management, involving many of its students and PE Department staff. It hosted the launch ceremony for China's delegation last month at the Wu-si Sports Center, where a lineup of 39 athletes and 8 coaches was announced.

This year marks the first time the Championship has been held in China, offering the international cycling community a first-hand window into the country's collegiate sports development.

Besides sports, the international teams also had a chance to experience Chinese culture, which was featured at the ceremony through performances of calligraphy, Tai Chi (an ancient Chinese martial art), Chinese opera, and Chongli's folk singing.

Leonz Eder, president of FISU, framed the Championship as not only a sports event, but also a chance for personal growth. "You come together as rivals, from different places and different backgrounds, but you will almost certainly leave as friends," reads his letter published on the official website.

Beyond competition, he also urged the athletes to have fun and "return home with memories that will last a lifetime."

The following day brought early highlights for the Chinese team. Danna Yiman finished first in the women's individual time trial held on the morning of June 25, and in the afternoon, the Chinese team won the mixed team relay time trial.
