BANGOR, Maine - Bangor International Airport is honored to welcome back The Summit Project Honor Case, now on public display just inside the front entrance of our terminal. The case will remain at BGR through the holiday season in a dedicated space where travelers and community members are invited to pause, remember and reflect. A dedication ceremony will be announced at a later date.
The Summit Project (TSP) is a living memorial honoring Maine service members who have died since Sept. 11, 2001. Each memorial stone was selected by a fallen service member's family and donated to the project. Through its traveling Honor Case, TSP brings that mission into communities, creating opportunities to learn about Maine's fallen heroes and help ensure they are never forgotten.
The display includes memorial stones and biographies that introduce visitors to the people behind the names- their lives, their service and the loved ones who carry their memories. A bench beside the case provides a place to sit and reflect.
BGR's military connections span its history as the former Dow Air Force Base, its continued support of military flights and the longstanding work of the Maine Troop Greeters. Having previously hosted the Honor Case in 2016 and April 2023, the airport is grateful to once again serve as a custodian of these heroes' stones.
That responsibility extends beyond caring for the stones themselves. It means helping tell their stories to the people who come through BGR's doors, inviting each visitor to learn their names and understand something of the lives they lived. For the airport community, hosting the case is a meaningful commitment to remembrance and to the families who have entrusted these stones to our care.
The public is invited to visit throughout the holiday season, read the stories and join the BGR community as we "stand watch" over this special memorial.
