Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) issued the following statement after President Trump signed into law appropriations legislation containing policies championed by Ways and Means members to improve health care access and screenings, increase accountability of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), promote supply chain resiliency through trade, and strengthen America's economic interests in the Western hemisphere:
"The Ways and Means Committee delivered one of the most significant pieces of legislation last year with the passage of the Working Families Tax Cuts, and this year we are building on that momentum by advancing critical reforms in our jurisdiction that deliver better health care, stronger trade policy, and real accountability for patients. Thanks to the hard work and leadership of our members in shepherding these bills through the legislative process, we delivered key wins for the American people - priorities we have heard reinforced time and again in witness testimony before the Committee. These reforms will help lower health care costs, improve access to the care patients need, bring long-overdue accountability to drug middlemen, and advance America's strategic interests. The Ways and Means Committee will keep fighting for policies that make health care more affordable for all Americans, expand access, and strengthen our trade and economic security."
