In October 2025, the Colorado Springs Police Department anticipates receiving new Automated Vehicle Identification System (AVIS) technology in the form of two mobile Speed Safety Camera (SSC) systems. While new technology to the City of Colorado Springs, this technology has a proven record of helping to improve roadway safety in other cities around the world.
We strive to improve traffic safety in the community by increasing voluntary compliance with laws and best driving practices. We do this through education, communication, collaboration, and enforcement. Enforcement includes leveraging technology in ways that improve the safety of community members throughout Colorado Springs.
The utilization of SSCs is a complement to our existing AVIS technology, photo red light enforcement and is just one portion of our traffic enforcement strategy. The SSCs will be deployed in vehicles to areas where there are vulnerable roadway users. The SSCs will only be deployed in four areas:
Our deployment strategy prioritizes protecting our children, so we will be deploying to school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. In between those times, we will be on roadways bordering municipal parks and neighborhoods. Construction zones will be enforced as well, depending upon need and location.
Once CSPD receives the vehicles that will house the Speed Safety Camera AVIS systems, and before they are deployed into the community for 30 days of warnings, CSPD will share additional information.
For further information about CSPD's AVIS program, see our website, where further information about the AVIS cameras and programs will be regularly updated: ColoradoSprings.gov/speed-safety-camera-program.
This notification is in compliance with C.R.S. §42-4-110.5 and City Code §10.1.115, and meets the requirement to publicly announce the implementation of a new AVIS system to the community.
