Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement upon his arrival at the Informal Meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers “Gymnich” (Wicklow, 02.09.2026)

At today's Informal Meeting of European Union Foreign Affairs Ministers in Ireland, we will discuss pressing issues concerning the global security architecture, the Middle East, and instances where revisionism has become particularly acute. Greece has consistently stood by those defending themselves, by International Law, and in support of freedom of navigation and human dignity.

Furthermore, we will have the opportunity to discuss issues related to the European Union's external action. How the European Union can strengthen its geopolitical and diplomatic footprint in the world, while maintaining its strategic autonomy, so as to make a meaningful contribution to the resolution of major disputes and the peaceful coexistence of peoples.

Finally, I will have the opportunity to brief the Foreign Affairs Ministers of EU member states on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean, as well as on all issues relating to violations of International Law.

The European Union must stand united in the face of every violation of International Law. Greece has always upheld international rules and remains fully committed to international multilateralism. At the same time, there can be no compromise when it comes to the rules of international legality.
