BLM Increases Grazing Flexibility in Louse Canyon

VALE, Ore. - The Bureau of Land Management is providing ranchers greater flexibility in how they manage their operations and extending the grazing season to better support long-term rangeland health by issuing three proposed grazing decisions that renew permits across half a million acres in southeast Oregon.

"Healthy rangelands are crucial to the ranching economy," said Acting BLM Vale District Manager Mike Decker. "These decisions that will provide long-term clarity to our permittees, who are crucial employers in this rural community."

Good grazing practices maintain rangeland health, reduce wildfire risk, and sustain rural communities that power the American economy. These actions will support local jobs and provide long-term economic benefits through sustainable ranching operations.

"Public land ranchers-like our permittees right here in southeast Oregon-play a key role in food security and keeping grocery prices down," Decker added.

Public lands belong to the American people. The BLM actively manages rangelands to increase economic returns for the safety and benefit of rural communities, in support of Secretary's Order 3419, "Delivering Emergency Price Relief for American Families and Defeating the Cost-of-Living Crisis."

Along with the proposed grazing decisions, the final Environmental Impact Statement for the Louse Canyon Geographic Management Area Rangeland Health Management Actions, which analyzes the proposed decisions, is available on the BLM NEPA Register.

The BLM manages about 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.
