Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen will travel to Poland to attend the Warsaw Security Forum on 12 and 13 October. The event will bring together high-level international political, military and industry leaders to discuss European security issues and transatlantic cooperation. Representatives of civil society, research institutes and leading companies will also take part in the forum.
On Tuesday 13 October, Minister Rantanen will participate in a panel discussion focusing on hybrid threats and how states prepare for and respond to them. The discussion will also address the resilience of societies and citizens.
Hybrid threats place new demands on the work of public authorities and on cooperation between them. Finland, security threats are addressed as part of our comprehensive preparedness approach, in which citizens also play a central role. People must have the knowledge and skills needed to cope with different types of disruption.
"In recent years, Finland has introduced several measures in response to the deteriorating security environment. For example, we have updated legislation concerning the Finnish Border Guard and the police to ensure that the authorities have sufficient powers to address potential threats," says Minister Rantanen.
During her visit, Minister Rantanen will also hold a bilateral meeting with Poland's Minister of the Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński. The ministers will discuss the protection of external borders and ways to make returns more effective. Their agenda will also include the international Civil Protection Shelter Coalition led by Ukraine and Finland, which Poland has also been invited to join. The coalition finances the construction of new civil defence shelters and the refurbishment of existing shelter facilities in Ukraine.
