Joint Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport to discuss the regulation of online platforms and online safety with Gráinne Seoige

20 Jan 2026, 17:57

The Joint Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport will meet on Wednesday January 21st to discuss the regulation of online platforms and online safety.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 12:30-15:00.

Broadcaster Gráinne Seoige will appear at the Committee.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Alan Kelly said: "The Committee welcomes the opportunity to hear from broadcaster Gráinne Seoige who will share her experience and to assist Members in examining whether current laws and enforcement powers are robust enough to tackle harm online.

Ms Seoige will discuss the impact that a deepfake non-consensual AI intimate image of her was widely shared online during her general election campaign in 2024.

The production and sharing of AI-generated sexual images without consent highlights major gaps in our laws and in how online platforms respond.

Online safety is now one of the most urgent public policy challenges of our time, particularly for young people and for women and girls.

Ms Seoige publicly spoke about her experience on Prime Time on RTÉ last week and has since received messages from parents of teenagers and women who have had similar experiences.

This meeting is part of the Committee's ongoing work to examine whether regulation and enforcement are strong enough to protect people from harm online.

The Committee has also invited Meta, TikTok, Google and X to a hearing on 4th February 2026 to discuss these issues."
