On 24 October, we mark United Nations Day, commemorating the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, which laid the foundations for maintaining international peace, security, and cooperation among nations. Over the past eight decades, the United Nations has evolved into a key multilateral platform for dialogue and joint action in addressing global challenges and building a more just and secure future for all.
United Nations Day reminds us that no country can tackle complex global issues alone. Despite its challenges and imperfections, the UN has achieved significant results. Preserving multilateralism and maintaining a permanent forum for dialogue among nations remain among its greatest accomplishments.
In a world still marked by conflicts, crises, and inequalities - from the aggression against Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East to climate disasters and the aftermath of pandemics - the multilateral approach, with the UN at its core, remains indispensable. Despite the many challenges, the UN, through its agencies and missions, continues to foster stability, coordination, and dialogue among states, while ongoing reforms enhance the effectiveness of its key bodies in the fields of peace and security, development, and human rights.
Over the past year, the UN has placed particular emphasis on bridging the digital divide, advancing climate justice, and strengthening global standards for the protection of the most vulnerable. Through coordinated action, it has further improved the efficiency of its bodies and agencies, focusing especially on combating poverty, improving education and healthcare, and responding to climate-related disasters - reaffirming its role as a driving force for a safer and fairer future.
UN initiatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, the Declaration on Future Generations, and the UN80 Initiative illustrate how the Organization promotes global cooperation, youth engagement, and a multidisciplinary approach to contemporary challenges. In doing so, it has modernized its approach and underscored the importance of intergenerational responsibility and digital security.
At the same time, through these initiatives and the continuous reform of its structures, the UN demonstrates its readiness to confront the complex challenges of today's world, providing a platform for cooperation among states and all sectors of society. Croatia, as an active and committed member, strongly supports this multilateral approach, recognizing that lasting solutions to global problems can only be achieved through joint action.
Croatia remains firmly committed to ensuring that the UN reflects the realities of the modern world and continues to fulfil its core mission effectively. Through active participation in global processes, Croatia promotes peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development. To further contribute to multilateralism, Croatia has presented its candidatures for membership in key UN bodies: the Peacebuilding Commission (2026-2027), the Security Council (2030-2031), and the Human Rights Council (2032-2034). In doing so, Croatia reaffirms its readiness to remain an active and credible partner in strengthening international cooperation and building a more just and resilient world for future generations.
