Privacy Commissioner's Office and Digital Policy Office Jointly Organise "Safeguarding Personal Data AI Sandbox" Roadshow

In active alignment with the National 15th Five-Year Plan that advocated exploring innovative regulatory approaches such as regulatory sandboxes, and to implement the policy directions set out in Hong Kong's First Five-Year Plan and the Honourable Chief Executive's 2026 Policy Address to take forward the AI+ Initiative on all fronts and promote digital education, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) and the Digital Policy Office (DPO) co-organised a Roadshow for the "Safeguarding Personal Data AI Sandbox" (Sandbox) on 6 October, following the launch of the Sandbox earlier.

The Roadshow for the Sandbox brought together 20 AI solution providers and attracted over 150 principals, teaching staff and information technology support personnel from primary and secondary schools. Participants exchanged views on the applications of AI in educational settings and the challenges it poses to personal data privacy. During the Roadshow, AI solution providers set up exhibition booths to introduce and demonstrate a diverse range of AI solutions. Through hands-on experience and exchanges with the AI solution providers, participants gained a deeper understanding of the functions and use cases of various AI-powered educational tools, and explored how AI technologies could be effectively utilised to support teaching and learning, as well as school administration.

In her opening remarks, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Privacy Commissioner), Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling, said that AI presents unprecedented opportunities for the education sector, not only in enhancing teaching and learning experiences but also in improving administrative efficiency in schools. She also reminded schools of the importance of safeguarding personal data privacy and data security when adopting AI, and ensuring compliance with the relevant requirements of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Mr SUN Yue-man Brian, Assistant Commissioner (Data Applications), DPO, said in his opening remarks that schools should systematically drive comprehensive educational innovation and promote the progressive integration of AI into learning, teaching, and assessment. He added that the Sandbox aims to assist schools in adopting AI in their operations in a safe and responsible manner, enabling them to advance innovation in teaching and management while properly addressing privacy and other related risks.

The Sandbox is open for application until 30 October 2026. Interested schools may complete the online application form at: https://eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/dpo034/en/.
