Downtown Grand Prairie: Building a More Vibrant Future

Downtown Grand Prairie is entering an exciting new chapter. Over the next several years, the city will invest in a series of phased improvements designed to create a more vibrant, accessible, and community-focused destination. From upgraded public spaces and modernized infrastructure to enhanced walkability and future development opportunities, these projects will strengthen downtown while preserving its historic character. Construction is already underway, with improvements continuing through 2029.

West of City Hall on Main Street
Site preparation at the former Calvary Church and Sonic restaurant properties is scheduled for completion by early September 2026. Clearing these sites will prepare the area for future development opportunities, including new businesses, public gathering spaces, and potential mixed-use projects that will further activate Main Street.

City Hall Green Space
Just south of City Hall, green space is being transformed into a welcoming community gathering place. A new performance stage is expected to be completed by September 2026, providing a venue for outdoor concerts, festivals, and community events. The city's Liberty Bell has also been refurbished and reinstalled with a commemorative plaque, while new shade structures will make the space more comfortable and inviting throughout the year.

Main Street Improvements (NW 6th Street to Belt Line Road)
Beginning in summer 2027 and continuing through summer 2029, Main Street will undergo one of the most significant improvements downtown. The project includes utility relocation, complete roadway reconstruction, and major pedestrian enhancements. The roadway will be reconfigured to one lane in each direction, allowing for wider sidewalks and a safer, more walkable streetscape that supports local businesses and encourages visitors to spend more time downtown.

Jefferson Street Reconstruction (State Highway 161 to Cimmaron Trail)
Construction will begin in early fall 2026 to reconstruct a portion of Jefferson Street. These improvements will enhance traffic flow, improve roadway durability, and support the city's long-term transportation needs. The project is anticipated to be completed by winter 2027.

Jefferson and Main Street Roundabout
A new roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Main Street, just east of downtown, beginning in winter 2026. Designed to redirect heavy truck traffic away from the downtown core, the roundabout will improve traffic operations while enhancing safety. It will also feature a signature public art installation that will serve as a welcoming gateway into Grand Prairie. Construction is expected to be complete by spring 2028.

Looking Ahead
These investments represent a long-term commitment to the future of downtown Grand Prairie. As each phase is completed, residents and visitors will experience safer streets, enhanced public spaces, improved mobility, and new opportunities for dining, shopping, entertainment, and community gatherings. While construction will take place over the next several years, the result will be a downtown that is better connected, more inviting, and positioned to thrive for generations to come.
