At the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Michel Demaré, Chair of the Board of the global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, and presented the opportunities offered by Lithuania's ecosystem for biotechnology and pharmaceutical investment.
"With our unique experience in genetic engineering, clinical trials, and the treatment of rare diseases-together with a significantly reduced administrative burden for innovative manufacturing projects and a clear national priority focus on healthcare and its financing-we offer Lithuania as a recipe for success in addressing competitiveness challenges in the European life sciences sector. We can provide Europe with a secure local supply chain for medicinal products, while investors can benefit from state incentives and access to a highly skilled pool of scientists and professionals. I invite the AstraZeneca team to take a closer look at the advantages of the Lithuanian ecosystem and develop investment cooperation," President Gitanas Nausėda noted.
According to the President, Lithuania's life sciences sector demonstrates what a concentrated community of talented scientists and entrepreneurs can achieve. The sector is growing faster than the overall economy and already accounts for 2.6% of Lithuania's GDP. It is expected to reach 5% by 2030. Plans are also underway in Vilnius to develop the largest biotechnology campus in Europe, with €7 billion in business investment projected. The President noted that it also possible to find ways to accelerate the expansion of the biotechnology sector into Lithuania's regions as well.
"Biotechnology is not only important to the advancement of modern medicine; it also lies at the intersection of defense, security, and resilience. It offers new ways to prevent, detect, and respond to emerging threats while strengthening the resilience and effectiveness of the armed forces. This is increasingly becoming an issue of both European and national security, and Lithuania has the ambition to become a center of excellence in this field," President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized.
