Chandler raises funds for Field of…

CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Chandler Military and Veterans Commission invites the community to participate in the first Salute to Service 5K at Veterans Oasis Park on Sunday, Oct. 25.

More than just a walk or run, the Salute to Service 5K brings the community together to honor local veterans while raising funds to support the Field of Honor Veterans Memorial at Veterans Oasis Park. The untimed event features a casual 5K route along the park's well-maintained trails, and encourages participants to walk, run and connect at their own pace.

"We're excited to create an event that brings our community together in support of those who have served our country," said Michael Simon, Chair of the Military and Veterans Commission. "Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy one of Chandler's beautiful parks while supporting a meaningful cause."

Proceeds from the Salute to Service 5K will go toward the maintenance of the Field of Honor Veterans Memorial, a place of recognition and remembrance for veterans from across the southeast valley.

Nearly one year after the memorial's dedication, more than 50 local veterans have been recognized at the Field of Honor. The memorial features engraved plaques displaying each veteran's name, rank and branch of service, creating a permanent tribute to the men and women who have served.

"The Field of Honor tells the stories of service that are all around us," said Simon. "Every name on the memorial represents a neighbor, friend or family member whose commitment and sacrifice helped shape our community and our country."

Nominations for the Field of Honor Veterans Memorial are accepted year-round, with plaques updated twice annually. The deadline for inclusion in the next plaque update is Sept. 15 and will be unveiled during Chandler's Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 8.

Eligible nominees must have been honorably discharged from the U.S. military and lived within the southeast valley, including Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek, San Tan Valley or the Gila River Indian Reservation.

Veterans Honor Wall applications are available on the City of Chandler website and require basic information about the veteran, proof of southeast valley residency and documentation of military service. A minimum $50 donation is requested for approved nominations.

The Field of Honor Veterans Memorial is located on the southwest corner of Veterans Oasis Park, 4050 E. Chandler Heights Road.
