UN negotiation simulation at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs

As part of a Security Council simulation, university students discussed the escalating situation in the Middle East and relations with Iran. Meanwhile, in a UN Human Rights Council simulation, high school students addressed the issue of women's human rights in Afghanistan.

First, the participants were addressed by Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon, who wished them success, courage and diplomatic skill in the negotiations. This was followed by an address by Tadeja Forštner Perklič, Head of the Department for International Organisations, who emphasised that today's event was not only a simulation of procedures and resolutions, but also an opportunity to learn about the culture of dialogue, respect and responsibility. Nika Zver Špan, President of the Model United Nations Slovenia Club, said: "If we want to build a fairer and more equitable world, we need to develop a deeper understanding of others. Simply knowing and expressing our own views is not enough. We need to truly understand the perspectives, fears and hopes of other people."

Ambassador Barbara Žvokelj, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, delivered the closing remarks and presented the participants with awards and certificates for successfully completing the simulation. She emphasised the importance of a career in diplomacy and encouraged the young people present to consider this path. In a video message, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar encouraged those taking part in the UN Security Council simulation. Meanwhile, Ambassador Anita Pipan addressed the participants in the UN Human Rights Council simulation. The two ambassadors also shared their extensive experience of working in multilateral settings.
