On Wednesday (10 June 2026), NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with the Conference of Presidents at the European Parliament in Brussels. In a session chaired by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, the Secretary General called NATO's cooperation with the European Union essential to protect the security and freedom of our citizens.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Rutte emphasized that European Allies are stepping up in strengthening our collective security to create a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO. After highlighting that NATO remains the cornerstone of European security, the Secretary General said that the NATO Summit in Ankara next month will showcase that Allies are investing more in defence, accelerating industrial production, and sustaining support for Ukraine.
The Secretary General stressed the need to re-energise the defence industrial base, accelerate innovation, and expand transatlantic defence cooperation. He welcomed the EU's efforts to boost European defence readiness.
