(WASHINGTON) - Teamsters are encouraging lawmakers to support the Connected Vehicle Security Act of 2026, introduced by Senators Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) and Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.). The legislation would ban vehicles connected to outside networks if they are manufactured by China or other foreign adversaries, including driverless cars and trucks.
"Make no mistake - the Chinese Communist Party is working desperately to get into American markets so it can undermine both our middle class and our national security," said Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien. "Vehicle manufacturers backed by the regime are working desperately to reach the American market so they can destroy not just thousands of Teamster jobs, but the manufacturing base of our entire country. Furthermore, we cannot allow any technology that could be used for surveillance by a foreign adversary into our workplaces or onto our roads."
In addition to banning specific vehicles, the legislation also forbids their related components, empowers the Department of Commerce to identify high risk technologies, and establishes enforcement mechanisms to ensure they are kept out of domestic markets.
"Our elected officials can't sit by idly while this threat gets worse," O'Brien said. "We commend Senators Moreno and Slotkin for taking decisive action before it is too late, and call for the Connected Vehicle Security Act to be signed into law."
