EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes: Improving road infrastructure at Polish-Ukrainian border

Yesterday, Ukraine completed repair works at the Yahodyn TEN-T road border crossing point as part of a joint cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian beneficiaries under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The works aim to ensure smooth and seamless TEN-T cross border connectivity and support the Solidarity Lanes initiative.

This milestone is part of the broader project receiving around 62,3 million EUR of CEF grant support along with technical assistance from JASPERS - the advisory programme of the European Investment Bank (EIB), as well as co-financing opportunities available through the dedicated EIB framework loan. It is yet another tangible result of EU-Ukraine cooperation, contributing to the physical integration of Ukraine and its transport systems.

The completed works include the renewal of the pavement, installation of road lighting, safety barriers, road signs and other traffic management measures, with the aim to better manage traffic flows and increase the capacity of the border crossing point. Further works are ongoing on the Polish side, including the construction of the S12 expressway and preparation of comprehensive design documentation for a freight terminal in Okopy, Poland (near Dorohusk).

As part of the broader project, similar capacity increase measures are underway for other TEN-T road border crossing points between the EU and Ukraine, for example along the Polish-Ukrainian border in Krakovets/Korczowa and Rava-Ruska/Hrebenne, including additional parking spaces on the Ukraine side and access roads.

This joint project is expected to be finalised in 2027.

Background

The Dorohusk-Yahodyn border crossing point is part of the EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes, an initiative to establish and improve transport routes in response to Russia's illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In total, the EU has mobilised more than EUR 2.3 billion to improve the Solidarity Lanes - out of which EUR 1.55 billion in non-reimbursable grant support from the Connecting Europe Facility supporting the priority transport cross-border connections of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).
