HONOLULU - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies O'ahu motorists that resurfacing and pavement reconstruction of the Ward Avenue overpass will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

The work will be done in three phases, starting with Phase A on Ward Avenue from Kīna'u Street to the H-1 eastbound onramp. Phase B will include the Ward Avenue overpass from the H-1 eastbound onramp to Lunalilo Street. Phase C will include the Ward Avenue and Lunalilo Street intersection. Each phase is estimated to take approximately one week to complete.

The Ward Avenue overpass will be fully closed from Kīna'u Street to the H-1 eastbound on-ramp during this work. Work will take place nightly, Sunday through Thursday, from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., through Thursday, Nov. 19. All work is weather permitting, excluding holidays. There will be no work on Monday, Nov. 10 and Tuesday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

Detours are available around the work area in either direction.

  • Mauka-bound motorists on Ward Avenue will be detoured via Kīna'u Street then Pi'ikoi Street then Lunalilo Street, to continue onto Victoria Street then Green Street then Emerson Street where they may reenter Lunalilo Street to continue west.
  • Makai-bound motorists will be detoured via Emerson Street then Green Street then Thurston Avenue, to continue onto Wilder Avenue then Pensacola Street then South Beretania Street where they may rejoin makai-bound Ward Avenue. See detour map above for details.

Please proceed with caution and obey all posted construction signage through the work area. Special duty police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Electronic message boards will be posted to notify motorists of detours.

The scope of this work includes paving, bridge joint repair, adjustment of utility manholes, installation of pavement markings, and installation of traffic signal detector loops. Crews will return at a later date for concrete repairs to the bridge rails along the sidewalk and shoulder; this work will be announced as it is scheduled.

The resurfacing of the Ward Avenue overpass is part of the H-1 Resurfacing project between the Miller Street pedestrian overpass and the Kapi'olani Boulevard Interchange. Resurfacing of the H-1 Freeway, in both directions between the Miller Street pedestrian overpass and the Kapiʻolani Boulevard interchange, was completed under this project's scope between October 2023 and October 2024. This final phase, which began in June, includes resurfacing, repairing and/or reconstructing associated cross- and frontage streets within the project limits and bringing guardrails, pavement markings and lighting up to current design standards.

HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities. For a full list of lane closures scheduled on state roadways, please visit the HDOT website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/.
