To continue delivering the highest-quality water to residents, firefighters, and Stafford businesses, Utilities crews conduct hydrant flushing on a rotating basis throughout Stafford County each year. From October 19, 2026, through the end of November, crews will flush hydrants in the northeastern area of Stafford County, including the Falmouth, Garrisonville, and Aquia Districts. This includes areas north of Eskimo Hill Road up to the Embry Mill area and primarily east of Interstate 95.
The flushing process cleans the water system by opening fire hydrants to increase water flow, allowing crews to "flush" minerals and sediment that naturally accumulate in water mains over the year. When hydrant flushing occurs in neighborhoods, residents may notice a short-term decrease in water pressure and slight discoloration in water from the faucet. This discoloration consists primarily of harmless silt and air and does not affect the water's safety. If this happens, simply run the cold water tap for three to five minutes. Customers should always avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear.
Uni-directional flushing is the most effective way to clean Stafford's distribution system and is an important supplement to the annual flushing program. For more information and tips for minimizing water discoloration during hydrant flushing, please visit
