KING, WI - The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) hosted a ceremony to unveil a new Battlefield Cross statue at the Wisconsin Veteran Memorial Cemetery (CWVMC) in King, near Waupaca, WI, on Wednesday, May 13. WDVA Secretary James Bond gave keynote remarks expressing appreciation for the community's efforts to help make the new monument possible.
"As we look toward Memorial Day ceremonies and the 250th anniversary of the founding of our Republic, it seems right and fitting that Wisconsin's oldest veteran's cemetery now has its own battlefield cross for visitors, veterans, and their families to experience and to reflect upon," said Secretary Bond.
The monument was made possible by the generous donations from local American Legion Post 161 and VFW Post 1037. Both have an extensive and proud history of serving veterans, especially as rifle teams and honor guard partners at the veteran's cemetery.
"Our post is proud to be a part of getting the Battlefield Cross placed at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at King to honor all veterans, past and present, who died in defense of our county," said Will Pope, Adjutant, American Legion Post 161.
"This new Battlefield Cross is about showing our enduring appreciation for everyone who served and sacrificed for our nation," said Richard "Dick" Morey, Adjutant, VFW Post 1037.
The Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery (CWVMC) at King, WI, is Wisconsin's oldest state veterans cemetery, formally established in 1888 with the burial of a Civil War veteran. It serves as the final resting place for over 8,500 veterans and their dependents. It is located near Waupaca, WI, and remains a historic and lasting tribute to all those who served.
