Steve joins us from a remarkable three-year run on Metro as National's deputy editor for news, bringing with him a reputation as a news hound who absolutely loves a big story. On Metro, Steve was one of the driving forces behind coverage of some of the biggest stories in the world, from the search for Luigi Mangione to the criminal trial of Donald Trump in Manhattan.

"If something big is happening, Steve Merelman is dying to jump into the middle of it," said Felice Belman, a veteran of National who has worked alongside Steve on Metro. "That makes him precisely the editor you want leading the coverage of a major news event - marshaling the troops, updating the live blog, editing 400 stories simultaneously while lining up folos galore - all with a sense of humor."

In this pivotal new role, Steve will unify our news operation across the country, driving our breaking news agenda and ensuring seamless collaboration with the News Desk, Live, Express Photo, Video, Graphics and other partner teams. He will be charged with elevating our news judgment and speed, fostering consensus on editorial choices and ensuring our report is nothing short of best in class. His monster work-ethic, infectious excitement about stories and inextinguishable good humor will fit right in on National.
