Trump Has Shattered His 2024 Coalition Arrow

Trump reaches negative net approval with working class white voters for first time in his second term

The coalition that delivered Donald Trump the presidency in 2024 is falling apart and now, for the first time in his second term, Trump is underwater with white working class voters - and it's no wonder why. Trump has wrecked the economy and sold out working families by making historic cuts to health care and food assistance to pay for tax cuts for the rich and his unpopular war of choice with Iran.

Trump's economy has been a disaster for working families. Wages are down and prices are soaring as his war with Iran has pushed the average price for a gallon of gas to $4.11 nationwide. U.S. employers cut more than 60,000 jobs in March - 25% more than the cuts announced in February - and the economy lost 11,000 factory jobs in March. February had the lowest hiring rate since the peak of the COVID pandemic, and before that, since January 2011. Goldman Sachs estimates that Trump's unpopular war of choice with Iran will cost 10,000 jobs per month through the end of the year.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

"At every turn, Donald Trump has sold out working families to pay for his massive tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations and now for his deadly and costly war with Iran. Trump's disastrous trade war jacked up prices for everyday goods and tanked the job market to record lows and then he and Republicans made massive cuts to health care and food assistance for everyday Americans - it's no wonder he's bleeding support even from his base of voters that delivered him the presidency. Trump has made one thing clear: it's Trump first, working families last, and now it's costing Republicans his political coalition."

The American people have soured on Trump: Trump's average net approval ratings remain deeply underwater on the economy (-23), trade (-24) and inflation (-32). His approval rating for handling the economy has fallen to a new career low of 31%. Meanwhile, over 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump's war - including one in five Republicans - and nearly the same amount said the U.S. made the wrong decision using military force in Iran.
