Trump Administration Announces Nearly $186 Million to Expand Rural Healthcare Access, Modernize Technology, and Grow the Healthcare Workforce Across Idaho
This federal investment will equip rural providers with modern technology, support healthcare training and retention, and expand healthcare in rural homes and communities
Today, the Trump Administration announced nearly $186 million in Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) funding to improve healthcare access across rural Idaho. This investment will help rural providers deliver and coordinate care locally through modern technology, new care models, an expanded healthcare workforce, and improvements to healthcare facilities. Idaho has committed its full $186 million in fiscal year 2026 funding to improve healthcare in rural communities across the state.
This transformational $186 million investment supports five initiatives designed to strengthen healthcare delivery and modernize rural Idaho's healthcare system. Funding for telehealth, cybersecurity, and electronic health record modernization will help rural providers deliver and coordinate care better locally. Investments in community health workers and emergency medical services professionals will help bring services into homes and communities, while training, recruitment, and retention efforts will grow Idaho's rural healthcare workforce. This funding will also support programs addressing chronic disease, behavioral health, maternal and child health, as well as improvements to rural healthcare facilities and equipment.
The Rural Health Transformation Program is expanding access to quality healthcare, regardless of a patient's ZIP code, while equipping first responders with the lifesaving resources they need when every second counts. This funding will make critical investments to strengthen rural healthcare, expand access to lifesaving services, and bring modern technology to communities across Idaho.
"President Trump understands that every American deserves high-quality healthcare, no matter where they live," said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. "We are putting resources directly into rural communities to strengthen the health workforce, modernize infrastructure, expand access, and bring care closer to home. We are giving states the flexibility to build solutions around the people they serve, while demanding accountability for results. That is how we strengthen rural health, improve the lives of patients and families, and Make America Healthy Again."
"President Trump made a historic commitment to rural America, and these investments are turning that commitment into better care for patients in communities across Idaho," said Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. "This is what rural health transformation should look like: federal investment that is putting patients first, driving lasting improvements and expanding healthcare for the hardworking Americans who call these communities home."
Today's investment was made possible through the Working Families Tax Cuts Act - passed by Republicans in Congress and unanimously opposed by Democrats - delivering a historic $50 billion investment to help states transform the way healthcare is delivered in America.
"For many Idaho families - especially in rural areas - affordable, accessible health care is a real concern. This investment recognizes those challenges and puts resources where they're needed most. It helps strengthen local health care and ensures Idahoans can get the affordable care they need, no matter where they live," Gov. Brad Little said.
"From supporting workforce development programs to deploying cutting-edge technologies, these projects will tackle some of the biggest challenges facing Idaho's rural health care system," said Sen. Mike Crapo. "With more funding to come in the next few years, the Rural Health Transformation Program will permanently increase access to high-quality health care across Idaho."
"The Rural Health Transformation Program is crucial to strengthening access to healthcare in rural Idaho communities," said Sen. James Risch. "This funding will help ensure Idahoans in every corner of the state have the resources they need to keep their families healthy."
"Rural health care is a vital issue for many Idahoans. Through the $186 million in federal funding Idaho is expected to receive, rural communities across our state will have opportunities to strengthen the physician workforce, improve emergency communications, assess health care shortages, and modernize cybersecurity. This funding is an important investment in rural Idaho, and I'm proud to support efforts to strengthen health care in our communities," said Rep. Russ Fulcher.
"Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts, Idaho will receive more than $185 million through the Rural Health Transformation Program. This historic initiative is the largest investment in rural health care in American history. I've said this since President Trump signed this tax relief into law, but this was one of the most important bills I've supported in Congress. I'm thrilled to see this funding come back to rural Idaho," said Rep. Mike Simpson.
Today's announcement highlights the overall funding amount awarded to Idaho for fiscal year 2026.
Key initiatives the overall RHTP funding will focus on include:
The Trump Administration is delivering on its commitment to strengthen rural America by investing in solutions that modernize technology to promote health and well-being for rural communities. Led by CMS, the RHTP is moving beyond the failed one-size-fits-all approach and giving rural communities the tools to build stronger, more innovative, and more sustainable health systems that deliver better care and better outcomes for the Americans they serve.
