As one of her editors previously said, Emma Goldberg can do it all. Since joining The New York Times in 2019 as an assistant for the editorial board, Emma has covered "return to office" and general assignment features for Business and has brought her keen eye to Styles as a features reporter. Somehow, she managed to also write a book, "Life on the Line: Young Doctors Come of Age in a Pandemic."
The exploration of young adults has been a running theme throughout her work, and we are pleased to announce that Emma will join the City Hall team tasked with chronicling the administration of Zohran Mamdani, the youngest New York City mayor in a century.
Emma has already jumped into coverage, most recently volunteering to work on New Year's Day to cover Mamdani's first news conference as mayor. During the election, she dug into how his campaign went beyond traditional retail politics and tapped into Gen Z's desire for community .
"Emma brings such fresh delight and curiosity to every story," said Stella Bugbee, Styles editor. "And she never rests on her laurels! I can't wait to see how she covers one of the most important beats of 2026."
While on Business, Emma wrote memorably about hybrid work , bosses with feelings and the Great Resignation . She also wrote about workers affected by A.I. and policies affecting the homeless .
In 2024, her story " An Atheist Chaplain and a Death Row Inmate's Final Hours " won best feature story from the Newswomen's Club of New York.
On Styles, she looked beyond the office to write stories that captured how people were living and shaping the world around them, including stories about young conservative women , pronatalists and women going off birth control .
Emma lives in Brooklyn with her partner and is always on the lookout for a good book recommendation.
Please join us in congratulating her.
