Florissant Fossil Beds Eases Fire Restrictions

Florissant, Colo. - Florissant Fossil Beds will return to Stage 1 fire restrictions at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026. The restrictions align with multiple state and federal partners in order to reduce the risk of fire in the region.
The following acts are prohibited:

The lighting and maintaining of a fire for warmth, cooking, or aesthetics.

Smoking, except within a personally owned enclosed vehicle or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren of all flammable materials.

The use and/or possession of fireworks or pyrotechnics of any kind.
Area Description:
All lands within the boundaries of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.
Fire use is regulated to protect resources and visitors. Stage 1 fire restrictions are intended to reduce the number of human-caused fires during periods of high fire danger by decreasing potential sources of ignition.
Teller County continues to experience critical fire conditions - extremely dry fuels, above normal temperatures, low humidity, minimal precipitation, and high winds. As many fires continue to burn across the West, competition for firefighting resources remains high.
When necessary, park law enforcement rangers will issue citations to persons violating the terms of this closure under authority of Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations.
