JECohen’s Benjamin Baehr Empowers High School Students at Philadelphia Financial Reality Fair

At JECohen, we believe that building a secure financial future begins with strong foundations. When young people are equipped with practical money management skills early in life, they gain the confidence to navigate real-world decisions and set ambitious goals for themselves and their families.

To support the next generation of financially savvy leaders, JECohen Financial Advisor Benjamin Baehr participated in the Philadelphia Financial Reality Fair on Tuesday, October 20. Held at the School District of Philadelphia headquarters, the multi-day initiative was hosted by the CrossState Credit Union Foundation, Financial Scholars, and Philly Phinancial Literacy Week, bringing together volunteers from across the region to mentor local high school students.

Hands-On Guidance for Real-World Decisions

The Philadelphia Financial Reality Fair brought together high school students enrolled in required personal finance courses in Philadelphia public high schools. Designed as an interactive simulation, the event challenged students to manage a monthly budget based on realistic incomes, expenses, and unexpected financial scenarios.

Serving as a financial advisor during the simulation, Baehr spent one-on-one time with students after they completed their initial budget calculations. Taking the time to dive into each student's unique choices, he reviewed discretionary income, discussed strategies for building emergency savings and paying down debt, and explored how smart credit habits today open doors tomorrow.

A central focus of Baehr's sessions was helping students map short-, medium-, and long-term goals, connecting immediate daily choices with the compounding power of early savings to set a trajectory for lifelong wealth creation.

"It was great to see how hard students worked to keep their expenses within their incomes, and how they were willing to make sacrifices to make it happen," said Baehr. "I hope the activity encourages them to think about the steps they can take now to set themselves up for success. It even inspired me to think about how I can start teaching these concepts to my fourth-grade son so he can build sound financial habits early."

Investing in Our Community's Future

With the majority of participants attending neighborhood high schools in historically underserved Philadelphia communities, the fair removed traditional barriers to financial education, providing students with direct access to practical tools they can use immediately.

Grounding the effort in youth empowerment and regional service, Baehr's involvement underscores JECohen's ongoing commitment to meeting community members where they are. By helping students realize their choices today shape the lives they can build tomorrow, events like the Financial Reality Fair help foster lasting financial independence across the communities we serve.
