POLK COUNTY, IOWA - U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today welcomed students and educators from 11 central Iowa high schools to his seventh Federal Judiciary Youth Summit held in Des Moines.
The summit provides students the opportunity to get first-hand insights into the judicial branch of government and is part of Grassley's longtime effort to foster civic participation and understanding of government among the next generation. This year, Grassley was joined by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Ebinger and U.S. Attorney David Waterman. Grassley recommended both Ebinger and Waterman to serve in the Southern District of Iowa and supported their nominations through the U.S. Senate.
During the question-and-answer session, Grassley answered students' questions on his professional background and his personal mentors, as well as his advice for overcoming challenges and establishing a work-life balance.
"I greatly appreciated meeting with students and educators today to discuss the federal judicial system, a branch of government that's essential to our system of checks and balances," Grassley said. "I always enjoy hearing from Iowa's next generation and I hope this experience fuels their interest in civic engagement for years to come. Thank you to everyone who took time out of their day to attend, and thank you to Judge Ebinger and Mr. Waterman for sharing their experiences and working tirelessly to secure justice for Iowans."
"I'm a government civics teacher and I think today's event was a wonderful opportunity and glimpse into how our U.S. government works … I think [Senator Grassley] is the essence of what this country stands for because he's meeting the people who he represents, and I think that if every politician did what he did we would have a much better system of government and the foundations and principles that we stand for. Now I believe and I'm more encouraged by people like Senator Grassley." - J.W. Reed Christian Academy Teacher
"The Youth Summit was amazing. It was very informational and inspiring. I just really like how [the speakers] showed how they cared about us and that they wanted to hear our voices and that are voices mattered." - J.W. Reed Christian Academy Student
"I really liked [the summit]. I was very intrigued and very interested to hear what [the speakers] had to say. It gave a lot of insight about just government in general, but also, about how the state works and how the districts actually come together and work together ... I'm very thankful for the Youth Summit seminar. Very insightful." - J.W. Reed Christian Academy Student
