Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) today announced that it helped recover more than $33 million in lost life insurance benefits and annuities since January 1 for more than 1,600 Pennsylvanians through the NAIC's Life Insurance Policy Locator service, advancing the Shapiro Administration's work to help Pennsylvanians recover money and benefits they're rightfully owed.
"At PID, we're proud to play a part in helping Pennsylvanians during this difficult time, and we want consumers to know we're here to assist in any way we can as it relates to tracking down lost life insurance policies," said Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys. "The life locator tool is free and easy to use and helps connect Pennsylvanians with the benefits and annuities their loved one intended for them to have. We urge any Pennsylvanian who believes they're a beneficiary on a lost life insurance policy to contact PID so that we can submit your information into the database. You'll be notified if your name is included in a policy."
Pennsylvanians contact PID regularly regarding lost life insurance policies and oftentimes are unaware of the life locator tool and its benefits. PID then directs consumers to the locator tool through the Department's Life Insurance webpage and also offers to submit the information on behalf of the consumer. Since January 1, more than 2,500 Pennsylvanians submitted a search request form through the locator tool. Of those requests, 1,615 matches were identified, resulting in the recovery of $33.5 million in benefits from lost life and annuity insurance policies. In 2025, PID helped connect almost 4,700 Pennsylvanians to more than $116 million lost life insurance benefits and annuities through the locator tool.
Pennsylvania law requires all companies selling life insurance policies in Pennsylvania to participate in the service, so individuals who believe they are beneficiaries, executors or legal representatives of a deceased person are encouraged to submit a search request form.
When a request is received, the NAIC will ask participating life insurance companies to search their records to determine whether they have a life insurance policy or annuity contract in the name of the deceased. If a policy is found and the requester is the beneficiary, the insurance company will reach out directly.
