WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Erin Houchin (IN-09) released the following statement after House and Senate Democrats voted against the clean Continuing Resolution to keep the government open.
"House and Senate Republicans did our job to fund the government. Democrats refused. They are demanding $1.5 trillion in far-left partisan spending in exchange for funding the standard operations of government for four weeks. Their demands include health care for illegal immigrants, millions to fund biased public media, extending COVID-era Obamacare subsidies and they even want to cut $50 billion in rural health care funding.
Chuck Schumer caved to political pressure from the far-left for fear of a primary election. The American people deserve a government that works for them, not one held hostage by political games. Unfortunately, Democrats have chosen partisanship over a clean short-term funding bill, forcing a government shutdown that will hurt families, service members, and communities across the country. Democrats supported 13 clean CRs before, but now they've forced a shutdown to appease their far-left base and push a trillion-dollar liberal wish list. The reality is that our troops won't get paid, FEMA services will be halted, and families who rely on WIC will be left without support.
For questions about the shutdown or assistance with a federal agency, please reach out. An information sheet will be posted to our website. My office remains open and ready to serve constituents during this time.
