The Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the National Grid Foundation, today announced the launch of the Staten Island Energy Affordability Initiative, a new program designed to help small businesses manage rising natural gas costs and stabilize operations during a period of significant economic pressure.
Administered by the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the initiative will provide flexible financial assistance to small businesses experiencing hardship due to increased utility expenses. Grants ranging from $500 up to $10,000 will be available to help offset gas utility costs, prevent service disruptions, and support modest energy-related improvements that reduce ongoing expenses.
"Small businesses across Staten Island are facing unprecedented increases in energy costs, and many are struggling to absorb these expenses while keeping their doors open," said Linda Baran, President and CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce. "We thank National Grid for recognizing the critical role small businesses play in our community. This support will provide real relief to business owners facing rising energy costs and help ensure Staten Island's neighborhood businesses can continue to thrive."
The Staten Island Energy Affordability Initiative is designed to be responsive and accessible. Rather than requiring large capital projects, the program focuses on demonstrated need, allowing funding to be directed where it will have the greatest immediate impact. Assistance may be used for direct utility cost relief or reimbursed for eligible energy-related improvements, based on individual business circumstances.
"Our partnership with the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce reflects our commitment to working alongside trusted community organizations to address energy affordability challenges," said Robert Simmons, Vice President, U.S. Social Impact and Community Engagement and Executive Director of the National Grid Foundation. "By supporting small businesses facing rising energy costs, we're helping stabilize local economies and strengthen the communities we serve."
The initiative will exclusively serve Staten Island small businesses. The Application deadline is April 30, 2026. If selected, applicants will be notified in late May 2026.
