Improvement project on Business Interstate 55 through Sherman begins Aug. 10

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that an improvement project on Business Interstate 55 (Peoria Road and Sherman Boulevard) for approximately 4 miles from Dirksen Parkway in Springfield and going through Sherman begins Monday, Aug. 10. Work is expected to be completed in July 2027.

Improvements include resurfacing, new traffic signals, guardrails, curb and gutters and pavement markings. Lane closures are expected. Message boards, flaggers and barrels will be used to direct traffic through the work zones. Benefits of this $10 million project include extending the life of the road, providing a smooth driving surface to increase ride comfort and increasing safety with new traffic signals.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
