Washington, D.C.- Today, Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) and Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (MA-01) called upon Social Security Administration (SSA) Commissioner Frank Bisignano to finally give Congress and the American people the transparency they deserve after another whistleblowermade shocking allegations on key data being mishandled at SSA. This demand for answers follows an in-person, bipartisan meeting where Commissioner Bisignano dismissed allegations from another whistleblower and failed to inspire confidence that he is fully investigating these allegations.
"In the meeting, the two of us asked repeatedly about access by 'DOGE' members to the public's Social Security data, and SSA's apparent lack of oversight," wrote Larson and Neal. "Your responses seemingly minimized our grave concerns."
The lawmakers continued: "Yet contrary to your assertions, a new whistleblower has come forward alleging that a former 'DOGE' member, reportedly by his own account, copied files containing Social Security PII on all Americans, living or dead, onto his own personal device(s) and tried to use these files as a private citizen…[T]his bombshell new report fuels our alarm that under your watch a dangerous lack of oversight may have led to a major security breach of Americans' most private Social Security data."
Given the gravity of these allegations and the sensitivity of SSA data, Neal and Larson emphasized the need for a swift response, giving Commissioner Bisignano until March 26, 2026 to detail the extent of his knowledge of this situation, how SSA is investigating 'DOGE's actions at SSA and risk to the public, and what assurances he can provide about his leadership going forward.
