Fort Valley State University marked a historic milestone on Monday, January 12, 2026, with the official ribbon cutting of Legacy Hall, the University's newest on-campus housing facility. This momentous occasion was especially significant as it represents the first new campus housing built at FVSU since 2006 and was completed entirely debt-free, a rare and commendable achievement for higher education institutions.

The ceremony brought together students, faculty, staff, university leadership, construction partners, and respected members of the Fort Valley community to celebrate a project that symbolizes progress, growth and a lasting commitment to student success. The event opened with a warm and inspiring welcome from SGA President Duane Patrick Jr., who emphasized the meaning behind the building's name. He shared that Legacy Hall reflects the idea that Fort Valley State University students are actively creating legacies-especially in that very moment and within the walls of the new residence hall.

Following the welcome, Jonah Ball, president of Collegiate Life Ministries, led attendees in a heartfelt prayer and invocation, setting a reflective and grateful tone for the celebration.

Timothy Hatchett, Ph.D., vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, delivered a meaningful address highlighting the importance of Legacy Hall for current and future FVSU students. He spoke on how the new housing enhances the overall student experience and demonstrates the University's commitment to providing safe, modern and accessible living spaces that support academic and personal growth.

Remarks were also shared by Adam Berkstresser, construction manager at Piedmont Construction, who underscored the value of the partnership between his company and Fort Valley State University. He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to work with the University, noting how meaningful the project was and how FVSU's business positively impacts his company.

The ceremony concluded with powerful closing remarks from Paul Jones, Ph.D., the University's 10th President. Jones thanked everyone for being part of such a historic moment and described the ribbon cutting as the beginning of fruitful growth for Fort Valley State University. Jones also highlighted how meaningful it was to complete such a beautiful facility on time, within budget, and without incurring debt, calling it a true testament to strategic planning and collaboration.

Legacy Hall is a two-story, apartment building residence hall featuring eight units, each designed with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchenette and a full living room. The building is handicapped accessible and currently houses students, making it an active and vibrant part of campus life.

With the opening of Legacy Hall, Fort Valley State University continues to build on its rich history while investing confidently in its future-creating spaces where students can live, learn and build legacies that will last for generations.
