Build Beyond Dry January: Make Mindful Drinking a Year-Round Habit

COLUMBUS, Ohio - As we approach the end of Dry January, a month dedicated to reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption, the Ohio Department of Commerce's Division of Liquor Control (DOLC) encourages adults to build upon the momentum from the past month and turn it into lasting, healthy habits. By utilizing available resources that promote mindful alcohol consumption, Ohioans can make informed choices all year long.

"Dry January is more than a trend, this is an opportunity for Ohioans to reset and reflect on their relationship with alcohol," said DOLC Superintendent Jackie DeGenova. "We want to help individuals keep that progress going even after the calendar flips to February and beyond. Through our partnerships with the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health and other organizations, we provide tools and education that make responsible choices easier. Small steps today can lead to big health benefits tomorrow."

Ohioans can find practical guidance anytime through Ohio Liquor (OHLQ) and its partners. Resources include tips for setting personal goals, understanding alcohol's impact on physical and mental health, and creating supportive environments for change. These tools are available 24/7 at com.ohio.gov/SocialResponsibility and OHLQ.com.

The Ohio Department of Behavioral Health is also spotlighting resources from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) to help individuals assess their drinking patterns. Understanding how much you drink, and the risks associated with it, can empower better decisions.

"Any opportunity to take assessment is an opportunity for self-growth," said DBH Director Tia Marcel Moretti. "Behavioral health resources are available year-round to support Ohioans with stress, substance use, and overall mental wellness-whether someone is taking a short break, cutting back, or seeking longer-term support."

OhioDBH offers self-screening tools and links to helpful resources on its website. For immediate help, Ohioans experiencing a mental health or addiction crisis can call, text, or chat the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This free, confidential service is available 24/7 to support Ohioans in a behavioral health crisis.
