Tips for Avoiding Frozen Water Pipes this Winter

Frozen water pipes can cause serious damage to your home and disrupt your family's life each winter. Taking preventive measures now can save you from costly repairs and water damage later. Here is what you need to know to keep your pipes safe during cold weather

Preventing Frozen Pipes

Indoors

  • Keep your home heated to at least 55°F, including basements and less-used areas
  • Insulate pipes in cold or drafty spaces

Outdoors

  • Disconnect garden hoses
  • Turn off the basement valves and drain outdoor faucets

During Extreme Cold

  • Let a faucet drip slightly if your pipes are prone to freezing
  • Make sure warm air can reach water meters, especially if they are in colder areas of the home. Opening cabinet doors can help circulate heat around the pipes

If a Pipe Freezes

  • Never use a torch or flame to thaw a pipe
  • A hair dryer on low heat is the safest way to gradually thaw a pipe
  • Be aware that pipes may begin to leak as they thaw, so know where your master shutoff valve is located

Be Prepared

  • Locate your master shutoff valve, usually near the water heater, washing machine, or where the service enters your home, and make sure everyone in your household knows how to turn it off in an emergency
  • Keep a plumber's contact information handy for unexpected issues

Taking these steps can help protect your home from frozen pipes and keep your family safe and comfortable all winter
