Berlin-Global law firm Dentons has strengthened its Energy group in Germany with the recruitment of seasoned energy policy lawyer, Dr Stefan Kaufmann, who was a member of the German parliament (Bundestag) for 13 years until March 2025. He joins Dentons' Berlin office as Of Counsel.

From summer 2020 to August 2022, he served as the Federal Ministry of Education and Research's (BMBF) Innovation Commissioner for 'Green Hydrogen', where he contributed to the implementation of the German government's National Hydrogen Strategy. With his many years of experience in federal politics and advising leading industrial companies on the energy transition, Stefan Kaufmann will drive the further expansion of Dentons' Energy group with his knowledge and vast network in business, politics and industry associations.

Stefan Kaufmann brings extensive experience in the decarbonization of energy and industrial systems. He will support clients in expanding production capacities for green hydrogen, establishing storage and transport infrastructure - for example by ship, pipeline or rail - and deploying and integrating hydrogen technologies along the value chain. From his professional career as a lawyer and politician, he brings in-depth knowledge of regulation and experience working with ministries and authorities, especially in the planning, approval and implementation of major infrastructure projects.

"In Stefan, our Energy team is gaining a highly experienced figure in energy policy matters", said Thomas Schubert, Energy sector leader in Germany and Co-Head of the German Corporate and M&A practice at Dentons. "Deeply committed to the future and to innovation in the energy sector, he will support our clients as a catalyst and sparring partner on strategic and operational issues relating to energy transition. We are delighted to have him on board."

Dentons Co-Managing Partner Dr Rebekka Hye-Knudsen added: "The energy sector is one of the key industries of focus in Dentons' strategy and is also a cornerstone of the German economy - characterized by a high level of innovation and a significant need for advice in a constantly evolving regulatory environment. Stefan will help strengthen our team to address the needs of global and national industrial companies, SMEs and investors in an even more targeted and comprehensive manner."

Dr Stefan Kaufmann on joining Dentons: "I look forward to contributing my enthusiasm for innovation and my advisory experience to the strategic development of Dentons' Energy offering. The energy transition presents our economy with enormous challenges, but at the same time opens extraordinary opportunities. I aim to leverage my experience in energy policy as well as my network to support our clients in successfully implementing innovative concepts, business models and technologies to support that transition."

Dentons' Energy team advises clients on the latest legal and energy policy developments as well as transactions in the sector. The team is part of Dentons' global Energy group, which brings together more than 1,000 lawyers, including over 150 in Europe and 15 in Germany.
