The impact of social media on children and young people and ways to strengthen Nordic cooperation and security featured prominently on the agenda at the summer meeting of Nordic prime ministers and heads of government of autonomous regions on Thursday 20 August in Denmark.

"Nordic cooperation has become increasingly important in the current security landscape. Security in our neighbouring areas is a shared priority for our countries. We have already stepped up our cooperation and will continue to do so," said Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. In the discussions, Prime Minister Orpo stressed the importance of Nordic unity and continuing strong support for Ukraine.

"The Nordic countries have supported Ukraine consistently over the long term, both in defending itself against Russia's aggression and in working towards a just and lasting peace."

Another important topic of discussion at the meeting was the regulation of technology companies and the impact of social media on children and young people.

"This is a topical theme in Finland and the other Nordic countries, as well as in the EU. Social media plays an important role in young people's everyday lives. I am very pleased that the Nordic countries are discussing this topic together," said Prime Minister Orpo.

The meeting hosted by Denmark and the Faroe Islands began with a visit to the Høvelte Barracks in Birkerød, where the leaders discussed themes related to security and defence. The meeting then continued at the Danish Prime Minister's official residence, Marienborg.

The Nordic prime ministers convene annually for a summer meeting organised by the country holding the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers. This year, the meeting was hosted by Denmark and the Faroe Islands.
