Prescribed Burn in Santa Monica Mtns for Wildfire Safety 6/26 — Residents May See or Smell Smoke

Planned Prescribed Burn for Wildfire Safety Scheduled in the Santa Monica Mountains June 26 - Residents May See and Smell Smoke

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has scheduled a prescribed burn on Friday, June 26, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM near Santa Maria Road and Mulholland Road above Topanga, weather and conditions permitting.

This important wildfire safety project is part of a multi-agency fuel management effort led by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) in coordination with the Los Angeles County and Los Angeles City Fire Departments.

Approximately 53 acres will be treated one plot at a time using a "mosaic" burning approach, creating a patchwork of burned and unburned vegetation.

  • Reduces wildfire risk
  • Slows the spread and intensity of future fires
  • Creates safer conditions for firefighters
  • Improves ecosystem health and resilience

This is a planned, controlled burn conducted by trained personnel under an approved burn plan. Residents in nearby communities may see or smell smoke during the operation. People sensitive to smoke should limit outdoor activity if smoke is present.

Motorists near Santa Maria Road and Mulholland Road should watch for smoke, reduced visibility, and possible minor traffic delays.

Do not approach the area. Please do not report smoke from the designated burn area as a wildfire.
