City of Atlanta Concludes Summer Season Activations
ATLANTA- The City of Atlanta will conclude its summer heat-relief and recreation programs today, Friday, October 2, following a season of elevated temperatures across Atlanta.
"When temperatures rise, our responsibility is simple: make sure Atlantans have safe places to cool off, water to drink and resources they can count on," said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. "From our recreation centers and pools to AFRD hydration stations across all Atlanta neighborhoods, City employees and community partners stepped up all summer to help keep residents and visitors safe. We are grateful to every person who helped make that possible."
Managed by the Mayor's Office of Constituent Services and the Department of Parks and Recreation, the cooling center was open daily at the Selena S. Butler Recreation Center and provided residents and visitors a safe place to cool down during periods of extreme heat.
The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department and Department of Watershed Management also supported heat-relief efforts by operating hydration stations at AFRD stations throughout the summer across the city, including during FIFA World Cup activities. Residents and visitors could refill water bottles with ice and water or receive bottled water and cups from AFRD personnel.
The Department of Parks and Recreation also operated pools, splash pads, recreation centers, playgrounds, Camp Best Friends and five FIFA watch parties throughout the summer. Camp Best Friends enrolled 5,079 youth and served 62,800 meals, while the City's 12 pools and six splash pads recorded 76,793 visits.
These activations showcase the City's commitment to serving the people of Atlanta and ensuring that residents and visitors have access to resources that promote health, safety, and well-being during the summer season and beyond.
