Regional WA to experience Aurelio Costarella's extraordinary legacy

Regional Western Australians will have the opportunity to experience the legacy of one of Australia's most celebrated fashion designers through the WA Museum's travelling exhibition Costarella: Fashioning a Legacy.

Celebrating the life and work of Aurelio Costarella (1964-2025), and his remarkable contribution to global fashion, the exhibition honours a designer who was entirely self-taught and whose elegant creations earned international acclaim, while remaining deeply connected to his Western Australian roots.

Following the WA Museum's 2013 exhibition Aurelio Costarella: A 30 Year Retrospective, Aurelio Costarella gifted a significant collection to the Museum, including garments, accessories, paper patterns, toiles, and extensive archival material.

Drawing on this collection, alongside artefacts from generous lenders, the exhibition traces the career that took Costarella's designs to international runways and red carpets The exhibition also explores Costarella's life beyond fashion, including his later artistic practice and his tireless advocacy for mental health.

Visitors will discover the stories behind Costarella's extraordinary success and gain insight into the man whose work left a lasting mark on international fashion.

Developed by the WA Museum, the exhibition will make its debut at the Museum of Geraldton from 26 September 2026 to 31 January 2027, before touring to the Museum of the Goldfields from 20 March to 8 August 2027 and the Museum of the Great Southern from 4 September 2027 to 2 February 2028.

The exhibition is accompanied by an innovative public program accessible to all ages and families.
