On October 6, 2026, Professor Jennifer E Gallagher, Ambassador for International, Engagement & Service for King's College London (KCL), visited Tohoku University. At the Administration Building, she met with Toshiya Ueki, Executive Vice President for General Affairs, International Relations, and Academic Resources as well as Professor Guang Hong and Assistant Professor Takamasa Komiyama from the Graduate School of Dentistry.
During the meeting, EVP Ueki introduced Tohoku University's outlook as a University for International Research Excellence, as well as the university's initiatives related to integration between different fields and industry-university collaboration through its traditions in materials science and engineering and the 3GeV high-brilliance synchrotron radiation facility NanoTerasu.
Professor Gallagher, current President of the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR), expressed great interest in Tohoku University's research environment and its history of respecting diversity, and she introduced KCL's comprehensive framework for healthcare and medical fields, including dentistry. Both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration in interdisciplinary research in fields such as medicine, engineering, and agriculture, as well as in the oral health and preventive medicine sectors for super-aged societies.
Before the meeting, Professor Gallagher was given a tour of the Graduate School of Dentistry and Tohoku University Hospital. On the previous day, Professor Gallagher delivered a special lecture and engaged in informal discussions with management leaders at the Graduate School of Dentistry, which is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its department-level academic exchange agreement with KCL this year, further increasing mutual understanding.
This visit is expected to lead to a further deepening of academic and research cooperation between Japan and the UK.
